If you’re a Final Fantasy fan, today is the time to rejoice. Or it should be, whatever. Today sees the release of the first games in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, the first six games in the highly anticipated and long-awaited remastered series. These are 2D classics that have been reinvented and re-released before, but with more complex effects. Fans have been looking for a complete, definitive version.

However, there is a dark cloud hanging over this release – Square Enix’s handling of re-releases of traditional games. This has happened so many times that it’s hard to pin down a single issue – but at least I can pull from the archives and show my gross negligence in Chrono Trigger’s 2018 counter and Final Fantasy 2019 release 9. it made me ask “What does Square need to stop releasing bad HD versions ?”
Google Pixel 6a Release Date: Here’s When You Can Buy It
Now, credit goes to credit: Square Enix actually went ahead and fixed the time trigger. There was a huge response and the game was heavily modified over a period of six months. Final Fantasy 12 also did well, as its HD remaster has been tweaked and improved on all platforms – but not all games were so lucky. In fact, in the current versions of the various Final Fantasy games, the differences between the platforms are astounding. Some get bugfixes, some don’t. It’s almost like luck.
For example, let’s go back to the version of Final Fantasy 9 that I wrote about earlier. After articles like mine and public outcry, Square Enix promises to address the worst issues. A patch has been released for PS4 that fixes the obvious problem of the background music annoyingly restarting after every battle or card game. In a July 2019 tweet, Square Enix also committed to making the patch available for Switch, Xbox, Windows, and PC. However, two years later, it still hasn’t appeared on all platforms. The promise has been broken, and the Xbox One, Windows Store, iOS, Amazon App Store, and Square Enix Market versions are still bug-fixed on other platforms.
For mobile devices, the problem is even greater. If you can’t launch the game at all, you don’t need to worry about the bugs still there – FF9 is dangerously broken on newer OSes. FF9 on Android has an average rating of 1.9; not a fair result for one of the best JRPGs that is only a few years old. The situation is the same with iOS.

Honestly, this is what happens in mobile games. OS development isn’t a straightforward issue – but then again, these valuable ports aren’t being abandoned, or at least they shouldn’t be. The FF9 Google Play store page acknowledged the issue and promised to “fix it with an update soon” – but it’s still broken more than a year after it was released.
Final Fantasy 1-6 is getting a new Pixel Remaster, with the first three coming to Steam and mobile this week. Many fans have looked at this release only to find minor disappointments such as the extra jump added to these late game ports, poor font choices. , the split view sprite repaint (I think it’s great!) and the puzzling lack of a console release – while these are all valid concerns, I’m more concerned about Square’s history with this re-release.
I’m sure there will be console ports; A square is not crazy and doesn’t tend to leave money on the table. The font issue is bad, but PC users might be able to successfully fix it this weekend. But I can’t stop thinking about how uneven recent attempts to get rid of the old ones have been – and how patchy and sporadic the fixes and fixes for these problems continue to be. It’s true that many of these issues are pretty minor, especially on paper – but that’s like hacking the best games of all time a thousand times over. All these little things add up like a thousand cactus spines stabbing an unwary traveler with a swift KO.

We haven’t been able to test the Pixel Remaster for review yet, but I hope all goes well. I solved all the problems. But before you buy… remember how the last five reissues have done. Adjust your expectations. Hopefully these changes will put an end to this practice.
